Hello Jack,
Extremely I'm glad to find your concentration on particularly the idea of setting. Yea, setting means a lot in literary renderings although it claims new dimensions in the shifting trends of time.

Hi Jack,

I enjoyed reading this article about the relevance of setting to story and character. I am familiar with the short story examples you gave, as well as the novel "The Road".

A fine example of setting in story (one of the best examples ever, ever, ever!) is Ron Hansen's story "Nebraska". That very short story illustrates all of your five points, but most emphatically points four and five - symbolism and theme. And it sure as heck fulfills point one by placing the reader in a setting in the most vivid and poetic of ways imaginable.

Thank you for sharing your time with this well written and clear-eyed view of the deep importance of setting in story.
